Occupational Health & Safety Program in Industry

OVERVIEW

In order to do their task, workers are under the risks of getting work related diseases or accidents, come from work environment or procedures. Commitment to introducing safe business practices means developing protection programs for all workers from all potential hazards in the workplace. And the commitment must be coming from either management or the workers itself. Management should create the safe working environment, developing work procedures and providing health protection devices, in the other side, employees should follow all rules in the framework to protect them. To guarantee all will run smoothly, the effective training either for workers or supervisor, provided by management, is needed. Review of all above programs in the framework to detect any early failure, should be done as a part of continuing improvement.

OBJECTIVES

This course is intended to:

  • Give understanding the benefit of Health and Safety program implementation in the business.
  • Aware the significant meaning of the commitment from management and the workers, in the Health and Safety program implementation
  • Understand the significant value of the training and effective supervision in the said implementation.

COURSE PROGRAMMED

  1. Management Commitment
    Responsibility of implementation of Health and Safety Program must be from management. Everyone agrees that the safe workplace is very important in the framework to maintain the productivity, and it will be available by effort, not by accident. All above need commitment from both side, especially from management to provide health and safe workplaces, and good work procedures to be followed. Everyone has clear responsibility to keep all programs running well. Basically, in the implementation of Health and Safety Program, the main objectives are all workers as the main assets to be protected.
  2. RULES AND REGULATION
    Discussing the rules and regulation as a platform of program implementation, beside of best practices as referrences.
  3. HUMAN FACTORS
    Previously, development of Health and Safety Management System concentrate to the facilities, equipment and Management System itself. Nowadays, human error is known has significant contribution to the every accident and work related diseases. These problems’ influences by workplace environment and culture of the workers. Human Factors Analysis is focusing to how the above interaction contributing to the creating the safe workplace.
  4. SAFE WORK PROCEDURES
    Every task has potential health risk within it, visibly or not. For examples using of big and complicated machines and dangerous materials in the production process, loading-unloading activities, packaging,  materials handling, or any activities which involving back injury and repetitive strain injury. Safe work procedures are needed as guide to the workers, making them aware about potential health risks involve, and let them know how to avoid it during accomplishment the tasks.
  5. TRAINING AND SUPERVISION
    Workers have known how the job should be done, and understand the potential health risk within it. Training is the one of the ways how to deliver the knowledge to them, and making them work safely.  Adequate supervision is needed.
  6. EMPLOYEE ASSISSTANCE PROGRAM (EAP)
    Employee assistance program is a confidential, short term, counselling service for employees with personal problems that affect their work performance. EAPs should be part of company plan to promote wellness that involves written policies, supervisor and employee training. The program offers help with the resolution of problems that are affecting work. Employee Assistance Programs are designed to help people understand or overcome their personal problems.
